Het is geen controversiële uitspraak meer om te stellen dat Nederland in de laatste jaren een ruk naar rechts heeft meegemaakt. Alhoewel iedereen daar grosso modo akkoord mee gaat, is er weinig begrip over hoe die verschuiving precies heeft plaatsgevonden. Dat wreekt zich in het bijzonder bij links, dat als een murw gebeukte bokser in de ring lijkt te wachten op de bel die het einde van de ronde aankondigt. Men loopt van Wilders polemiek naar Wilders polemiek en houdt zich hooguit nog bezig met damage control. Daarom zijn de analyses van de "grand old man" van cultural studies - Stuart Hall - over de opkomst van Thatcher in de late jaren '70, nog steeds superrelevant. In de tekst hieronder analyseert Hall - met een sterk Gramsciaans begrippenkader - hoe Thatcherism haar politieke hegemonie heeft veroverd door in te spelen op bestaande problemen en die in een rechts kader heeft weten te manoeuvreren. Er zijn natuurlijk ook verschillen, zo is de economische crisis uit die tijd kwalitatief anders dan die in de huidige tijd, en af en toe doet zijn woordgebruik een beetje antiquarischlinks aan. Maar goed, een vergelijkbare maar geupdate analyse van de politiek van Fortuyn en Wilders beloven wij u ergens in de nabije toekomst te leveren.

No one seriously concerned with political strategies in the current situation can now afford to ignore the "swing to the Right". We may not yet understand its extent and its limits, its specific character, its causes and effects. We have so far—with one or two notable exceptions—failed to find strategies capable of mobilizing social forces strong enough in depth to turn its flank. But the tendency is hard to deny. It no longer looks like a temporary swing in the political fortunes, a short-term shift in the balance of forces. It has been well installed—a going concern—since the latter part of the 1960s. And, though it has developed through a series of different stages, its dynamic and momentum appears to be sustained. We need to discuss its parameters more fully and openly on the Left without inhibition or built-in guarantees.
